Why a loft conversion?

Using your loft space is another way to create additional space and add value to your property. In terms of loft conversions North London home owners do not usually use the loft space for any other propose then keeping old & long forgotten items. This whole space can be converted into one or even two additional bedrooms with an ensuite.

Where to start from?

Like any project the idea comes first, but there are many types of loft conversion. Most common are:

Dormer loft conversion. This is the most common type of loft conversion. In simple words it involves the conversion of you sloping roof into a horizontal position. The main advantages are:

  • a) you increase your floor area, which in other ways would have been inaccessible.
  • b) you gain one extra vertical wall and increase the overall volume of the loft space makes it more practical to use as living space.

Hip to Gable loft conversion. This type of loft conversion is often used to increase headroom in the location where a future staircase will be mounted. It is practical because you shift the staircase landing to the side of the building, which otherwise would be towards the centre of the new room where it may be impossible to gain the required headroom for a new staircase. It can be achieved by bringing up the flank wall of the building to the ridge height of your existing roof. A disadvantage is that planning permission maybe required due to a change in the appearance of your roof & flank wall.

Mansard Loft conversion. Very classic, beautiful and at the same time one of the most complex loft conversion. The slope of the roof has to be constructed to an angle of 72%. This involves bringing two side walls to the same level. The main advantage of this type of loft conversion is that it will almost certainly represent the maximum volume you can achieve from your project. Disadvantage – planning permission may be required.

Velux Loft Conversion. This type of conversion is the simplest as it does not require any alteration to your roof structure. The main advantage is that it is cost effective and usually doesn’t require Planning permission. Disadvantage – the volume of the loft space is not increased and this could lead to difficulties in installing an adequate staircase.
